Seamless integration with newsroom and graphics systems

Pompano Beach, FL, September 25, 2006…Pixel Power Inc. announced that WWL-TV in New Orleans is utilizing two Clarity 500, Clarity 200 and Clarity 5000 in its fast-paced news-driven operation.

One of the nation's highest-rated local television stations, CBS affiliate WWL-TV Channel Four broadcasts from New Orleans' world-famous French Quarter on historic North Rampart Street – preserving a broadcasting legacy with a unique spirit that reflects what is perhaps America's most unique city. WWL-TV produces over 35 hours of local programming every week. The station has been awarded six prestigious George Foster Peabody Awards, three National Edward R. Murrow Awards and a host of regional and local journalism and broadcasting awards.

Replacing WWL-TV’s current still stores and digital disk recorder, the Clarity500 systems were chosen because of their seamless integration with the Avid iNews Newsroom System. With the Clarity500s News Producers are able to search, browse, choose and title their own OTS (Over the Shoulder graphics) and monitor graphics without any user intervention. If a special graphic is needed, the producer simply clicks a button to request it and their job is done. The request is then filled by a graphic artist and input into the show.

The Clarity 500s are used exclusively for WWL-TV’s 6 hours of daily newscasts. One Clarity handles all OTS and monitor graphics, which are built by the news producers through iNews. They are able to browse and preview the graphics using iNews Control Air, which integrates perfectly with the Clarity. The other Clarity system provides some of the Full Screen graphics, which are built by the operators.

Patrick Heraty, News Production Manager for WWL-TV, states, “Using the Clarity 500 systems we are able to make our shows more visually interesting because of the capabilities of the systems. Before we only had a single channel of DDR; now we have two Clarity 500’s with 4 channels of video. All of our graphics have gone from being simple stills to animated graphics.”

Continuing, “The next big move down the horizon will be HD and upgrading to another platform. The Clarity500s in production will serve us well until we have to make that transition. In addition, we also have two Clarity systems for Master Control. One is for standard definition and one is for High-Definition. These allow us to simultaneously run news or weather crawls on both of our stations. While still in the implementation stage, the idea is for the Master Control operator to fire one button to control both machines, including squeezeback of the air signal if necessary.”
